The #rollandpaint Project

My new year's resolution for 2024 was to try a new art form every month until I landed on one that I loved. In January 2024 I signed up for a watercolour class and never looked back!

On March 29th, 2024 I started a daily painting practice, with the aim of working on my technique through small daily paintings. I didn't want to just sit staring at a blank page not knowing what to paint, so I set up some constraints. I chose a small set of watercolour practice exercises and rolled dice to pick which exercise I would be doing each day and which paints I would use from my, at the time, small collection of watercolour paints. I called it #rollandpaint.

My constraints evolved since I started. At first it was in store bought sketchbooks, then in handmade books, and most recently I've been working on loose sheets that I've cut from a roll of paper. My paint collection has grown to the point that rolling physical dice no longer makes sense. I use a random number generator and a spreadsheet of my paints instead. I branched out from exercises to themes and added water pastels as a medium.

I've painted every single day since I started and have no plans to stop any time soon.
